The law providing for the attendance of religious instruction in primary and secondary schools in Hungary has entered into force at the beginning of the new school year.

With recent changes to the law proposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, students must choose between Religion and Ethics.

Orban has said that this law will have the effect of reducing the consumption of drugs, alcohol and other deviations among young people. According to him, the goal was to reduce violence among Hungarian youth.

The leader of the JOBBIk nationalist party, Gabor Vona, said that he supports the new law, adding that it will be useful for young people and the whole society.

However, the socialist and liberal parties oppose compulsory schooling, asserting that everyone has the right to choose what is best for their children. /Telegraph/
